Known as the “Whiskey Route” for its adventurous and scenic approach, the Machame Route is one of the most popular trails on Kilimanjaro. It offers diverse landscapes, dramatic ridgelines, and excellent acclimatization through its climb-high, sleep-low strategy. Ideal for physically fit trekkers looking for a challenging but rewarding path to the summit.
Begin the trek at Machame Gate (1,800m), hiking through lush rainforest with giant ferns and moss-draped trees. Reach Machame Camp (3,000m) for your first night under canvas.
Ascend into the heather and moorland zone. Cross open ridges with panoramic views before reaching the Shira Plateau. Camp at Shira Camp (3,840m), where you'll see your first clear view of Kibo Peak.
Climb to Lava Tower (4,630m) for acclimatization before descending to Barranco Camp (3,960m). This “climb high, sleep low” approach helps your body adapt to the altitude.
Ascend gradually across alpine desert to Barafu Camp (4,640m), your base for the summit attempt. Get an early dinner and rest before your midnight climb.
Start the final ascent around midnight. Reach Stella Point (5,739m) and push onward to Uhuru Peak (5,895m). After celebrating at the top, descend to Mweka Camp (3,100m) for a well-earned rest.
Finish the trek with a descent through rainforest. Arrive at Mweka Gate for your summit certificate and transfer back to your hotel.
