The Marangu Route is the most established trail up Kilimanjaro, offering a steady ascent, comfortable sleeping huts, and beautiful scenery. Though considered one of the easier routes, it still demands good physical conditioning.
Depart from Arusha early in the morning and drive to Marangu Gate. After registration and briefing, begin your trek through the lush rainforest toward Mandara Hut. Along the trail, you may spot black-and-white colobus monkeys and colorful birds.
Distance: 8 km | Time: 4–5 hours | Altitude: 1,860m to 2,700m
Ascend from the rainforest into heath and moorland zones. The trail offers scenic views of Mawenzi Peak and the vast saddle connecting it to Kibo.
Distance: 12 km | Time: 6–8 hours | Altitude: 2,700m to 3,720m
Overnight at Horombo Hut
Spend the day acclimatizing with a short hike to Zebra Rocks or the Mawenzi Ridge. This extra day helps your body adjust to the increasing altitude.
Distance: 5–8 km (optional hikes)
Overnight at Horombo Hut
Continue through alpine desert terrain with sweeping views. Today’s hike is more demanding as you gain elevation and prepare for the summit attempt.
Distance: 10 km | Time: 6–7 hours | Altitude: 3,720m to 4,703m
Overnight at Kibo Hut
Start your final ascent at midnight under the stars. Hike slowly past Gilman’s Point and Stella Point, finally reaching Uhuru Peak – the highest point in Africa. Celebrate at the summit before descending to Kibo for rest, and then on to Horombo.
Distance: 21 km total | Time: 12–15 hours | Altitude: 4,703m to 5,895m, down to 3,720m
